We caught up with street artist Stik yesterday as he prepared for one of his most risque art placements since starting out. We were out and about taking photos when we bumped into Stik. Once he told us where he was going we just had to tag along. We actually filmed it and will edit for release in coming weeks...We are happy to report that he wasnt arrested and the piece has since vanished... As one of London’s most established and celebrated street artists, Stik continues to bless our streets with his unique, hyper-minimalist stick characters. Deceptively simple in form these striking images hold a hidden depth of subtlety which reveals itself long after the initial impact. Using only six lines and dots for eyes Stik gracefully evokes a frailty which transcends the stark form of his iconic work. He draws from the tradition of the logo but imbues it with something imperceptible, striking straight to the centre of the brain with a hidden message that will keep you guessing. Untrained, he draws purely from life experience exploring gender, sexuality, social status and the darker side of city life but manages to elevate these themes through the elegance of their execution.

Stik is invited to paint across Europe and lectures about the importance of street art in social change.  In a notorious move, he recently made sketches on the front line of the U.K. riots provoking mixed reactions from both press, rioters and the police when he reproduced the image as a mural in the aftermath. As unofficial social commentator Stik maintains he is not breaking the law but changing it.

Graffik Gallery curate Stik’s fourth and final solo show of 2011, a vibrant culmination of his creative processes. Unusually for Stik who is usually a solo artist, the elements that dominate the gallery are the result of  muti-media collaborations in industrial neon, traditional stained glass and machined timber. These are counteracted by Stik’s own epic “Crowd” and “Family” canvases reflecting on recent unrest within the context of tribal unity.

Graffik are proud to launch his long awaited, limited edition print; “Lovers” produced by Squarity.

Stik will be painting live at the opening.

Stik, Dow Chemical Co, Fake Cops

LSD went to meet Stik and show some support for this worthy cause. We knew Stik had painted some banners and we also knew there was a planned sponsored Water Run of sorts supported by the chemical giant Dow. This was canceled at the last minute due to the noise which had been made by anti-Dow protestors who were planning a day of direct action on the same date and in the same vicinity as the sponsored Water event.

It didn't take long before the Community Park Ranger came and laid down the so-called law on where and how they could hang their banners. Its wasn't the fault of the Community Park Ranger as they are just on the front line and trying to earn a living anyway they can to put food on the table. This we can sympathise with and understand.  Sadly due to massive cuts in basic law enforcement departments we are now coming face to face with relatively unqualified and poorly trained individuals who on given the slight bit of authority tend to take this illegal power to extremes.

The debate rolled on…The offending banners other than those put in trees by Stik were taken down and laid down on the grass. The Rangers wanted them out of sight but later accepted that the banners were doing no real harm.  The point is there was no recourse, no-one they could call to ask permission if they could be displayed on the grass.

It should be noted however that if Dow didn't pull out of the event the park would've been drenched in their banners. History states that Victoria Park was the first public park in the UK. The public part of the term Public Park means its open to the public but doesn't belong to the public because it belongs to the Council and though theoretically the Council is funded by public money you still cant hang a banner in that public space…

Live Art - Charity Event 12th March

‘Live Art’ A charity art fundraiser showcasing up and coming designers, 12th March, London Bridge

Who: I am a Vodafone World of Difference winner, Charlotte Pawle, who is organising an art fundraiser for children’s charity Hope for Children. Established artists who are donating work to the event and are planning to attend are; Alex Noble, Carrie Reichardt, Lucy McLauchlan, Steve Wilson, John Miers, Sam Bevington, Stickman and Matt Webb (Mutate Britain). Expect appearances and artwork from Elate, Pure Evil, Letman, Lewis Chaplin and David Montgomery.

What: Hope For Children are hosting “Live Art”, a charity fundraiser showcasing some of the UK’s most exciting up and coming artists. There will be something for everyone at this event, from painting and photography to illustration and street art. The line-up includes a mix up of prominent and inspirational young talent with fresh design graduates. There will be an auction on all artwork shown and a chance to witness the artists’ create a joint mosaic live! Plus, experience live visual audio performance and special guest DJ sets. There will be stalls selling accessories, small artworks, hand crafted Ugandan cards and kitsch cakes.

An online catalogue of most of the artwork will be released online on the 5th of March. The work will be open to bids at this point.

There will be a charity spokesperson at the event and I will be available for interview. Filming and photography will be allowed at the event.

Art Thieves Nick LSD Stik Man

News just coming in… Artist Stik recently gave LSD a limited edition piece commemorating Homelessness in Britain. The piece was part of a free Street Drop which sees artist producing works that's left on the streets for passersby to collect and keep. This gesture doesn't extend to collecting collected pieces from persons lucky enough to be around collecting in the first place.

Hence the Stik LSD piece has been stolen… The thieves then sent us photos…If you've spotted this piece anywhere else Please Send Us Photos…

The main installation is made up of over 20 larger-than-life figures suspended
along the full 50 metres of the Art Pavilion. The figures, each manifesting their
own emotion, compliment and jar in an overall composition as the viewer moves
them around on tensioned cable creating strange, comical and sometimes sinister
scenarios. The neat lines compliment those of the bright lakeside pavilion whilst
the art bursts out into elegant water garden (and beyond, unofficially!)

Stik’s clean black-on-white “stick-man” style became well know for the simple yet
striking graffiti pieces across the city for almost a decade and more
recently larger authorised pieces for organisations including Glastonbury Festival
and British Waterways this year. Stik teams up with group Squarity to stage a
mass “ drop” of free artworks in central London this Christmas which aim to raise
the awareness of homelessness. Previews will be on display plus the launch of a new
print run.

Featured twice in Big Issue during November as well as headlining with MuTate’s
“One Foot in the Grove”, whilst curating “Other Side”, a show that put the work of
young local graffiti artists along side that of their heroes. Stik now clears the space
to host his third and largest solo show to date. The show is suitable for all ages but the interactive nature of the show may surprise
